At Italnatural Wines, we’re proud to import wines that tell a story — of land, tradition, and the hands that guide nature rather than control it. Among the most fascinating expressions in the world of natural wine are orange wines — rich, complex, and incredibly alive in the glass.
But what exactly are orange wines?
They are white wines made like red wines.
Traditionally, white grapes are pressed gently and fermented without their skins. But in orange winemaking, the juice stays in contact with the grape skins and seeds, sometimes for days, weeks, or even months (our KRIMISO reaches 10 months!) — just like in red winemaking. This process is called skin-contact or maceration.
The result? A white wine with colour, texture, and depth unlike anything else, called orange wine.
Key Characteristics of Orange Wines
- The colour shifts noticeably from classic white wine hues as skin contact increases — from golden tones to intense amber shades, depending on the length of maceration and the grape variety.
- Presence of tannins (rare in white wines), which add grip and structure.
- Aromas of dried fruit, herbs, tea, nuts, and sometimes a slight oxidative note.
- Flavours that evolve in the glass, sometimes bold, sometimes delicate — always complex.
These wines are especially loved by natural winemakers, also thanks to the antioxidant power of tannins. That’s why they’re often part of their productions — typically unfiltered and made with minimal intervention, allowing the winemaker, the grape and terroir to express themselves freely.
Orange Wines & Native Grapes: A Natural Match
We believe orange winemaking is a perfect canvas for showcasing rare and indigenous Italian varieties. Grapes like Malvasia, Ansonica, Zibibbo, and even Falanghina take on entirely new personalities when vinified with skin contact. Their aromatic complexity and natural acidity shine in this style, offering unexpected and deeply expressive results.
The same grape vinified in a traditional white style might be fresh, crisp, and floral.
But vinified as an orange wine?
It becomes earthy, textured, layered — revealing dimensions that would otherwise stay hidden.
Ancient Methods for Modern Drinkers
Orange winemaking isn’t new — it’s ancient. The earliest known wines, made in amphorae (clay vessels) in Georgia and Friuli, were essentially orange wines. Today’s natural winemakers are rediscovering this practice, especially those who favour low-intervention, soulful wines.
Amphora aging, in particular, adds a layer of purity and minerality, allowing oxidation in a controlled environment that softens the wine without stripping its energy.
Why We Love Orange Wines
At their best, orange wines are not just a drink — they’re an experience. They challenge preconceptions, pair beautifully with food, and invite conversation. They’re both ancient and avant-garde, familiar yet entirely new.
And for us, they represent everything we stand for:
- Authenticity over uniformity
- Character over perfection
- Nature over manipulation
