A Hidden Gem of Sangiovese in the Heart of Tuscany

Posted on

Tucked away in the timeless Tuscan countryside, Podere L’Assunta is a small yet exceptional estate dedicated exclusively to crafting wines from Sangiovese grapes. This boutique winery is a beacon of quality and authenticity, embodying the best of the region’s enological tradition.

The vineyard lies in the historic area of Poggiolo, perched on a hill that faces west toward Monteriggioni and south toward Siena. This unique dual exposure gives birth to the estate’s two singular wines:

  • Costa del Pievano, from the sun-drenched southern slope, cultivated in the traditional Alberello method.
  • Ametato, a rare gem produced in just a few hundred bottles from the cooler, breezier western-facing vines.

At the heart of this project is Giacomo Sensi – owner, winemaker, and agronomist with deep expertise and international experience. In recent years, Giacomo has turned his focus to his family’s long-held vineyard, once his father’s but never before bottled under its own label. The result is nothing short of extraordinary.

Giacomo is not only a skilled vintner but a truly admirable steward of the land. His deep respect for the soil and sincere dedication to preserving and enhancing its character are evident in every bottle. He approaches viticulture with a no-compromise philosophy, allowing the territory and grape to speak with purity and strength.

The Costa del Pievano is a clear and compelling expression of this vision. Brilliant ruby in color, it opens with a rich and complex bouquet. Striking aromas of red berries—currants, blueberries, and black cherries—lead the way, supported by elegant floral hints of violet. The aging in large oak barrels imparts subtle tertiary notes of licorice, tobacco, and dark chocolate, adding depth and nuance.

On the palate, it is honest, refined, and supremely elegant. Even in its youth—such as the 2019 vintage—it shows beautiful balance and drinkability. Yet for those with patience, it promises a long and graceful evolution in the bottle. The finish is delightfully persistent, with an intriguing balsamic undertone that lingers beautifully.

Only 6,000 bottles of this wine are produced, and only in the very best vintages.

Cheers to authenticity, craftsmanship, and the timeless soul of Sangiovese.
